In its 3rd year the Tony Allen X continues to evolve and transform with some incredible rotating talent as well as rotating drummers!

In this edition we welcome vocalists Thando Sikwila , Bobby Alu , Jason Heerah and Cazeau Oslo, with an incredible new 12 x piece band.

This tribute is a celebration of the great Nigerian Afrobeat drummer, innovator and musical director.

Tony Allen was an Integral part of development of the genre during the formative years of Fela Kuti’s Africa 70 Band.

He then went on to release groundbreaking solo and collaborative albums for the next 40 years.. that helped cement Afrobeat as a worldwide genre that went on to influence countless other music forms. And made him an international drumming icon, celebrated by audiences and musicians alike.

These series of concerts celebrate his body of work with songs from selected eras going back to his 1970’s material. As well as a few special unreleased collaborations with Melbourne based percussionist and producer Zhonu ‘Nui’ Moon.


Nui has assembled a powerhouse band of some of Australia's best African and jazz musicians.

BASSIDI KONE

Bassidi Koné is of Bwa ethnicity from the San region in central Mali. Born into a Griot family, Bassidi grew up beside his father’s primary instrument, the balafon, instilling in him his forefathers’ traditional village songs and rhythms passed down through many generations. Since these early childhood experiences, Bassidi has carried on this musical heritage and legacy.


Also the band leader of Bwazan a Malian based Traditional group which have innovated their own arrangements and instrumentation reflecting the sound of their elders and ancestors with the greatest of respect. They uphold their musical heritage by promoting and preserving the identity, spirituality and cultural richness of their Bwa ethnicity. They are a delight musically, performing their uplifting music with great professionalism, soul, enthusiasm and joy. Complex movements, precision and harmony, combined with energetic dances, describe this ensemble of talented, young artists, who maintain the traditions of village masters.


Bwazan have won numerous Malian Awards of art and culture , and with their 3 album releases are at the forefront of traditional Malian music.
