Cheryl Durongpisitkul is one of Melbourne’s most electrifying saxophonists.
A female-identifying, Asian, queer composer and saxophonist, Cheryl studied jazz performance at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts from 2009 – _2011, completeing a BMus – Honours in 2016 at the Victorian College of the Arts (MCM), graduating with First Class Honours.
In 2017 she released her debut album, a long form, through-composed piece with an accompanying narrative. In 2019, she was awarded the SIMA Young Composers award which allowed her to write a new piece under the tutelage of Barney McAll for a 10-piece ensemble, which premiered at the Sydney Women’s Jazz Festival in 2020, and in 2022 was commissioned by the Monash Art Ensemble to compose a 20-minute piece, which premiered at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.
In 2022 she was commissioned to write a piece for Homophonic which premiered at the Midsumma Festival in January, 2023 and the Inventi Ensemble which premiered in April 2023. She is the 2023 recipient of the Take Note Leadership program run by the Melbourne International Jazz Festival in 2023 and I have been chosen to attend masterclasses run by the NYC label, New Amsterdam.
