Ayebatonye at Glamorama Saturdays invites one of the most exciting and innovative DJ’s and performers coming out of Eora.
A decade behind the decks has lead to an illustrious career sharing her unique blend of deep bass with old-school jackin’ house, jersey club, rolling techno, and afro-rhythms. Recent stand-out performances at Strawberry Fields, Pitch Music & Arts, Meadow, and Inner Varnika have led to a well-deserved thriving and loyal “Club Abundance” fan base.
Ayebatonye’s success shines as a perfect example of how a community focused approach to music can encourage and inspire others and we cannot wait to welcome her to our floor at Glamorama Saturdays in collaboration with Leaps & Bounds.
Supporting Ayebatonye is a lineup including some of Naarm’s best BIPOC selectors in Afrodisiac, DJ Nay Nay, and Joey Coco.
Ayebatonye
Ayebatonye began DJing in 2011 after being drawn in by the allure of creating new sounds through mixing tracks together. In the last ten years she’s cultivated her own unique sound and is best known for her bold and eclectic sonic stylings. Not one to stick to any genre, Ayebatonye’s entrancing sets blend together an array of global electronic sounds rich with afro rhythms, deep percussive drum beats, house, techno, jersey club and more. Her range with sets has led to her supporting iconic artists including The Illustrious Blacks, Marcellus Pittman, Tygapaw, Claire Morgan, CC:Disco!, SPFDJ, Tom Trago and an invitation from the Underground Resistance to open their show at Tresor, Berlin.
Enamoured by music since a young age, Ayebatonye has been involved with music in many different manifestations. At age 7 she began learning the keyboard and was heavily involved with choirs, musicals and bands (including a Tegan and Sara cover band) throughout her schooling years. With a keen ear for music, djing was a natural progression for her.
Music and community are the threads that connect all the facets of her work, and it was noticing a lack of access to electronic music for communities of colour that led to the formation of Irregular Fit in 2018. Irregular Fit is a DIY arts platform that centres Bla(c)k, Brown and People of colour who engage with the arts as both artists and audience members. The ethos that guides the arts platform is contributing to opportunities for equity and access in the arts and music ecologies. Since its inception Irregular Fit has run free beginner DJ workshops, hosted events, facilitated research and community engagement projects with support from respected institutions including The Red Rattler Theatre, Beats by Dre, City of Sydney, Inner West Council and Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre.
Ayebatonye frequently contributes her knowledge and experience on issues within and beyond Australia’s arts community providing sage social commentary through her online platforms, speaking engagements and new podcast series Four to the Floor: Exploring the Bl(c)k roots of contemporary music, a series dedicated to pay homage to Bla(c)k artists past and present who have contributed to the music world abundantly.
Afrodisiac
Afrodisiac champions pleasure and interconnectedness in her sets that explore the black diaspora through heavy percussion, bass lines and repetitive vocals; she also has an affinity for edits that pay homage to her memories of dancing to MTV and Rage as a kid.
KSMBA
KSMBA is a Naarm based classical musician turned DJ. With a love for percussive, deep and hypnotic dance music, their sets aim to take you on a journey into their soundworld, exploring texture, movement and energy. Fresh to the scene, they have already made their mark on dancefloors and parties around Naarm such as at Beyond the Valley, Miscellania, Revolver Upstairs, XE54, SubClub, Echo Beach and Soothsayer.
Joey Coco
A purveyor of anything soulful and a deeply rooted Melbourne brother who quite simply has a passion for everything about music. A member of one of the hardest working Hip-Hop bands in Australia, touring nationally and internationally, Joey Coco decided to give into his childhood love of House music - quickly playing clubs and festivals country-wide. With his incredibly seamless mixing and music knowledge, he melds House, Techno, and Disco together with a Hip-House flare continuing to impress with talent, charisma, and thrilling vibes.
2022 saw the breakout track “Opus” with House royalty Jason Hodges and long-time collaborator Emerson Alexander reach the top of the Beatport charts with plays across the globe from the likes of Honey Dijon, Luke Solomon, Laurent Garnier + many more. Add a slew of remixes under the belt from Pinto, Melbourne Drum Authority and more and we are thrust into 2023 with the Q1 release of his new 4-track EP “Bonafide” out on acclaimed record label, Refuge Recordings, topped off with remixes from NYC’s Ralph Sessions.
