At first there was rock, then there was Dad-rock. The Fitzroy Pinnacle is proud to present Dawn of the Dad, a dad-rock themed mini-fest featuring some of Naarm’s favourite queer, femme and gender-non conforming artists.

Time to dust off ya New Balances, fire up the BBQ and grab us a beer out of fridge will ya mate? Dad-Rock is taking over the Pinnacle on Saturday 2nd July with the help of Zig Zag, Hearts and Rockets, Laura Imbruglia (duo), Tali Mahoney and Loveboner, all of whom will be taking the Pinny stage to play their favourite dad-rock banger. We’re talking Steely Dan, a bit o’ Dire Straits, whatever makes you wanna grab the fish fingers out of the freezer and pretend to resent the family cat.

Is that “Does it look like I’m made out of money?!” we hear? Never fear, Dawn of the Dad is free! A free event in this economy? Bargain! See you at the pub.

Dawn of the Dad takes place on the stolen land of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging. Sovereignty has never been ceded, this always was and always will be Aboriginal Land.

Zig Zag are half garage rock extremists, half disco junkie night cats, swinging these contradictions in the air, careless and free and flaming with pride. As a collective of queers, Zig Zag embraces experiences of pain and trauma with camaraderie and optimism. Zig Zag build catchy riffs around expressive lyrics, burning up the dance floor with anthemic angst. It’s punk, it’s celebratory, it’s cathartic, it’s yours. The only thing it’s not is straight. Zig Zag features members of Loobs, Laura Imbruglia’s Bin Chickens, Scratch Match and more.

Hearts and Rockets is a feminist bratwave DIY duo based in Naarm. Tracks from their new EP ‘TV Is Boring’ has received support from community radio across Australia, as well as spins on triple j, Double J, WFMU, BBC Radio 4 and more. Hearts and Rockets’ self-produced video clips for ‘Square Eyes’ and the latest single ‘Buy It’ have both been featured on iconic video clip program Rage.

Featuring delay-drenched vocals, driving bass lines, jabbing guitar and poppy synth, Kalindy and Kurt play snappy, punchy and fun post-punk bangers. While their tracks are for the most part under the 3-minute mark, the hooks will stay swimming around in your head for weeks.

TV Is Boring follows four singles from the band last year, including the double a-side 7” Dead As Disco / Workout, as well as breakthrough single Milk Bar, and the post-punk ripper You Don’t Know What You Have Until You’ve Had Enough, which featured on a split 7” with their mates Zig Zag.

Australian songwriter Laura Imbruglia has been releasing records since the early noughties. A restless musician with broad music taste, she’s released four albums, played almost every corner of Australia and several pockets of Europe. Although Laura has been quiet on the music front for the past 5 years (momentarily distracted by the creation of her beloved arts web series “Amateur Hour”), she’s finally back in the land of music.

Following from 2013’s What A Treat and breaking a five-year radio silence, Scared of You delves deep into the mind and listening habits of Laura’s past few years, traversing realms of pub rock, brooding indie pop, classic country, shoegaze, grunge and even yacht rock. With such a broad stylistic scope, exemplified through the album’s stand alone singles ‘Tricks’, ‘Diptych’, ‘The Creeps’, ‘Carry You Around’, and now ‘Give Boys Pink Toys’, Imbruglia has earned her stripes as one of Melbourne’s most exciting artists of today.

“The album focuses on the constant shift between insecurity, comfort, confusion and restlessness that occurs in all corners of life, and investigates and unpacks human fallibility. It wasn’t all that fun to write these songs but it sure is fun to play them!” – Laura Imbruglia

Tali Mahoney is the solo project of Tali Harding-Hone. Over the years Tali has exhibited her eclectic range and cemented her place as a mainstay in the local music community through her involvement in an assortment of projects including Enola, Hannah Kate and Dog Door. Growing up in Fitzroy, Tali masters the art of slacker-rock with subtle math undertones though her unique vocals, simple yet earnest lyricism and infectious riffs, all working together to capture the essence of coming of age in an ever-changing world, and getting out of bed one day at a time.

Loveboner are a 2-piece queer punk band who write songs to stimulate heart rates, celebrate cute dates, and alienate your straight mates. Their upcoming second album, “Loveboner are reinventing oral sex” is about trans identity, lockdown-induced thirst, the dehumanising forces of corporate bureaucracy, queer romance, cool stepdads, homoeroticism in action movies, Elon Musk and (of course) love.
